In the late 1990s, my approach to human development was forever changed. I wasn’t sitting in a traditional seminar or reading a self-help book; I was deep in the world of Forum Theatre, applying the radical methods of Augusto Boal across a wide range of sectors and organizations.
What I witnessed during those years shaped the very foundation of how I work today. I realized that most people don’t need a “coach” to tell them what to do. They need an enabler—a facilitator who provides the stage for them to uncover the confidence, motivation, and self-belief that is already sitting dormant within them.
Boal was a visionary who believed that traditional theatre was a tool for passivity. He saw the “Fourth Wall”—the invisible barrier between the actors on stage and the audience in the seats—as a metaphor for how we live our lives: watching from the sidelines, following a script we didn’t write.
In my work using Forum Theatre, I saw firsthand what happens when the “audience” is invited to stop the action, walk onto the stage, and try a different approach to a crisis. They weren’t just thinking about change; they were rehearsing it.
The distinction is vital to the Core Confidence Blueprint. Coaching often implies a hierarchy where one person has the answers. A facilitator (which is how I see myself) creates the environment—the “theatre”—where you become the expert on your own life.
My years of using Boal’s methods taught me that you already possess the knowledge and skills to solve your most complex problems. You don’t need to be “fixed.” You simply need a safe space to practice being the protagonist of your own story.
This isn’t a concept I just read about in a textbook; it is a lived practice that I’ve used to help people navigate real-world challenges for decades. We move through four distinct Acts:
Act I: Clarity (The Vision): Most goal setting starts with the “problem.” I believe that’s the wrong way around. If we look at challenges first, we often only see why change is impossible. Instead, we start by clearly seeing your Desired Future. We define the destination and the purpose first, creating a “North Star” that provides the pull needed to overcome any obstacle.
Act II: Strength (The Foundation): Once we know where we are going, we build the internal resilience and self-belief necessary to step into that new role. This is where your core motivation is unearthed and fortified.
Act III: Application (The Rehearsal): Knowledge can be redundant if it is not applied. Confidence grows from the ability to consistently and consciously apply what you have discovered about yourself. This is the “Forum” where you take your insights and practice them in the real world.
Act IV: Sustenance (The Long Run): Performance isn’t a one-time event; it’s a lifestyle. We focus on how to maintain your momentum and ensure your self-belief remains robust, long after the first curtain call.
Boal’s work was always about empowering the individual. He knew that you cannot be a successful “actor” if the “person” is being ignored. In the Core Confidence Membership, we focus on your personal life first. I am here to facilitate your return to the stage of your own life. You’ve been a spectator for long enough. The stage is yours. Let’s start the rehearsal.
What a great article that really resonates with me.
